Most Anticipated Series of the Year

While it is early to say whether or not the end of the season will matter in terms of the playoffs, I am guessing there will be a lot of weight on the last home series of the 2012. The Detroit Tigers will be in town at Target Field from 9/28 -9/30 and it is going to be a big deal.

Moral Hazard of the Designated Hitter (Part 4 and Final)

A majority of this paper has highlighted a cost associated with the designated hitter rule: moral hazard problem. There exist other costs as well. The designated hitter rule, which ultimately leads to more hit batsmen, could unnecessarily increase the risk of injury.21 With only a little over 60 feet separating a pitcher with a 90 mile-per-hour fastball and the batter at the plate, there exists the potential for tragic results should the pitch make contact with the batter. In addition, there exists potential for a bench-clearing brawl as a form of retribution against the pitcher should the pitch hit the batter.22 These are serious costs.

Some of the costs mentioned, however, have already been addressed by the MLB. The MLB requires all batters wear some type of protective helmet while at bat and that balls be replaced early and often in order to reduce the risk of serious injury.23

While bench-clearing brawls may be dangerous to players, and despite how perverse it may be, fans most likely gain some utility from witnessing such events.24 Many sports fans, especially fans of hockey or football, enjoy watching aggression. Why wouldn’t baseball fans? Further, as previously discussed, the implementation of the double-warning rule has overshadowed the moral hazard created by the designated hitter rule and has resulted in more hit batsmen in both leagues. Clearly, if safety was the first priority, the double-warning rule would be repealed first, reducing the number of hit batsmen in both the AL and the NL.25 Nevertheless, most hit-by-pitch incidents involve minimal or no injury.26

In closing, although statistical data indicates the designated hitter rule creates a moral hazard in the AL, this hazard is somewhat overshadowed by the double-warning rule. If the designated hitter rule were to be eliminated, the moral hazard would not disappear, but be the consequence of another source. In the American League, teams and fans clearly benefit from the increased offense and attendance. This benefit must be compared to the potential of injury to the players, among other costs. Through cost-benefit analysis, baseball fans can see that the marginal benefits of the designated hitter rule exceed the marginal costs of the designated hitter rule, though the costs include moral hazard.

Moral Hazard of the Designated Hitter (Part 3)

It is important to note that this exact analysis is relevant to 1993. In 1994, for the first time since the designated hitter rule was introduced, the NL had more hit batsmen than did the AL. This has been true every year since 1994, with the exception of 1996 [Appendix B]. In 1994, MLB introduced another rule called the “double-warning rule”. 11 Under this rule, the umpire warns both teams if he believes a pitcher has intentionally hit a batter and, if a retaliatory hit follows such a warning, the offending pitcher and his manager are immediately ejected.12

Essentially this rule means that pitchers in both leagues have “one free hit” before both sides are warned.13 As a result of this rule, NL pitchers are now behaving like AL pitchers and a moral hazard now exists in both leagues. From 1994, the amount of batters hit by pitchers in both leagues has risen, though more significantly in the NL, to where they are now similar [Appendix B]. The double-warning rule has helped masked some of the moral hazard of the designated hitter rule and, should MLB extinguish the designated hitter rule, the moral hazard would simply stem from a different source.

Like almost every rule or law, the designated hitter rule has both its benefits and costs. Though the moral hazard problem is considered a disadvantage of the rule, there still exists the possibility that the benefits of such a rule could outweigh the costs. After some analysis, it will become clear that the marginal benefits of the designated hitter rule will exceed the marginal costs of the designated hitter rule. Advantages of the designated hitter rule were touched on lightly earlier in the paper.

First, the designated hitter rule increases a team’s offensive output, resulting in higher ballpark attendance. In 1972, the AL scored 824 fewer runs than the NL, with almost 200 fewer home runs [Appendix C]. 14 15 A season later, in 1973, the AL had 252 more runs scored than the NL, while hitting 377 home runs on the year, 2 more than the NL [Appendix C].16 17 According to Buehler and Calandrillo, economists Bruce Domazlicky and Peter Kerr found that an estimated 2,211 additional fans per opening can be attributed to the designated hitter rule.18

Second, the rule has the ability to extend the careers of older players or players plagued by an injury. For example, the rule allowed Jim Thome to play 6 more years as a designated hitter after being removed from defensive duty.19 Without the rule, Thome would have never reached his 600th home run. Similarly, the rule helps ease injured players back from recovery. Super star Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twin’s is expected to move to the designated hitter while recovering from his ongoing concussion symptoms as well as other ailments.20 Morneau may not be healthy enough to contribute defensively, but the designated hitter rule will allow him to continue his MLB career; a NL player with the same health complaints may be forced into retirement.

Moral Hazard of Designated Hitter (Part 2)

According the Major League Baseball, the designated hitter rule provides as follows: “A hitter may be designated to bat for the starting pitcher and all subsequent pitchers in any game without otherwise affecting the status of the pitcher(s) in the game…” [Appendix A]5 The rule goes on to state, among other things, that the designated hitter rule is not a mandatory one; a team can choose whether or not to adopt it.

After a period where pitchers dominated the game, leading to low-scoring ball games and decreased attendance, the AL implemented the designated hitter rule in 1973 with the goal of increasing offense and attendance by swelling the talent pool of batters in the lineup.6 7 Traditionally, competing teams field nine players who must both play defense and contribute offensively at the plate. When a team chooses a pitcher, who is responsible for putting the ball in play, they look at their pitching talent and ignore their batting talent. This tends to result in pitchers with relatively poor batting skills because their development has been weighted toward their primacy role. The designated hitter rule allows for a team to replace this ‘weak link’ with a player possessing greater offensive abilities, ultimately increasing the total offensive output.8

Though the rule succeeded at turning the AL into a power league, the success came at a cost. Because they are not required to appear at the plate, AL pitchers can throw at opposing batters with greater impunity than NL pitchers, who must take their turn at the plate, resulting in the AL having more batters hit by pitches than the NL. In other words, NL pitchers must internalize the cost of hitting an opposing batter, by facing the opposing pitcher at the plate; AL pitchers play without direct retaliation. From 1973 to 1993, the AL had 2,526 more hit batters than did the NL, with the AL having, on average, 475 hit batters per season, while the NL tallies in at, on average, 350 batters plunked [Appendix B].9 10

The results show that AL pitchers became much more willing to throw at batters after the designated hitter rule went into effect, creating a classic moral hazard problem. Pitchers who do not have to bat, where there is the potential for retaliation, are more willing to risk plunking batters than pitchers who do bat.

Today, baseball is considered America’s pastime, but this was not always the case. In 1973, amid waning fan interest, the American League (AL) of Major League Baseball (MLB) instituted the designated hitter rule1. The National League (NL) did not adopt the change. The permanent implementation of the designated hitter rule has created an asymmetry between the AL and the NL, as well as between baseball fans, which has persisted for more than four decades.

Proponents of the rule argue that it boosts the much-needed offense while eliminating monotonous managerial decision-making.2 Opponents contest that the rule eliminates managerial finesse and turns baseball into an undesirably predictable game.3 In any case, with the AL adoption of the rule, engineers of baseball have inadvertently created a delightful scenario for economists: the designated hitter rule creates the potential for a moral hazard problem.

To analyze the designated hitter rule, this paper will be using a law and economics approach. Such an approach will show how the existing rule could fail to provide the proper incentives for private entities to engage in socially optimal behavior and, as a consequence, there exists a potential for a situation where such insurance against risk lowers the incentive to take precaution.4

Further, this paper will examine other costs and benefits of the designated hitter rule, in particular whether or not the benefits of the designated hitter rule outweigh the costs, including moral hazard.

Twins White Sox Rivalry

With the Twins losing Michael Cuddyer and Jason Kubel to free agency, going to the Rockies and the Diamondbacks, respectively, there has ben a lot of discussion about the Twins and White Sox rivalry losing a lot of history.

We've lost Thome (who used to be a White Sox/sock?), Cuddyer and Kubel. They lost Ozzie Guillen, who always had plenty to say before during and after a Twins White Sox game.

Below are the Twins roster changes from last year's Opening Day:

Delmon Young: traded to Detroit last August, only to go on and be more awesome than he ever was with the Twins.
Jim Thome: traded to Cleveland last August, signed with the Phillies.
Joe Nathan: signed with Texas (which I think fits him perfectly, though it makes me sad).
Jose Mijares: Non-tendered.
Kevin Slowey: Traded to the Rockies.
Michael Cuddyer: Signed by the Rockies.
Jason Kubel: Signed by Arizona.

We've lost a lot of history, it's true - especially with Cuddy and Kubel. Kubel hit 22 of his 104 career home runs against the White Sox pitching staff. Cuddy played in 145 Twins Sox games, where he hit .356 off Mark Buehrle, John Danks, Gavin Floyd and Jake Peavy.

I cannot handle having another terrible season. I HATE HATE HATE losing to the Sox. The Twins need to get their act together and get some free agents aboard.

Twins Pitcher Heckles Advice

My last post was how the Twins are looking to be terrible again next year. With that, I have searched high and low for ways to make our opponents weaker since we obviously won't be stronger - I want to narrow the talent gap. How?

Through insults. I've found "The Big List of Pitcher Heckles" and I propose the Twins use these to get into the minds of the opposing pitcher. We need as many baserunners as possible, in hopes that those runners turn into runs.

Here are some of my favorite Heckles:

- He's going to take you so deep, you'll think you're a Chilean miner
- Check the roster, you might be left-handed
- Dick Cheney has better aim
- I hope you got your degree
- I could time your fastball with a calendar
- The UMP could steal on you

Twins in For Another Rough One

Looks like the Minnesota Twins will be sifting through the free agent leftovers. But, hey, that's alright - we had a great year last year and can handle dumping great players (Joe Nathan) and getting poor players in return.

Wait.

We need a starter. Mark Buehrle was picked up by the Marlins, C.J. Wilson by the Angels... who remains? Edwin Jackson and a bunch of veterans who are short on career longevity, which doesn't really work when you are in a rebuilding year anyway. What is the point of rebuilding when you'll just have to completely remodel next year?

I liked C.J. Wilson. We needed to try harder for him. I know Terry Ryan is trying to cut the budget, but right now we should be focused on not cutting wins. After all, last year we almost hit 100. Don't have a short memory, Twins fans. I'm still bitter.

It has been a weak year for the free agent class, meaning the Twins aren't likely to trade for a starter. Teams just aren't willing to do it and, when they are, they demand quality prospects in return. Of which the Twins have little.

Are we in for another rough year? Probably.

Twins Deals Closed So Far

To the disappointment of many Minnesota fans, the Twins found their closer in singing Matt Capps to a one-year deal worth $4.5 million that includes a $6 million option for 2013 with a $250,000 buyout.

Capps blew nine saves in 25 chances last year and held a 4.25 ERA. The Twins lost Joe Nathan to the Texas Rangers. The Twins remain confident he'll bounce back next year after dealing with forearm issues throughout the season.

Minnesota dealt Slowey to the Rockies for a player to be named. On a side note, I saw the Rockies at Coors Field this summer and they have quite a few talented players (despite their record) so I hope we get a good one. The way the Twins have been working in the offseason, chances are we won't though.

The Twins also selected right-handed pitcher Marty Popham from the Indians organization and lost right-handed pitcher Shooter Hunt to the Cardinals organization in the Minor League phase of the Rule 5 Draft.

More DH Talk for Morneau

Justin Morneau. Player of four All-Star games, winner of two Silver Slugger awards and recipient of AL MVP, all while manning first base.

The Minnesota Twins are now considering moving him to full-time DH.

Morneau, as we all know too well, has suffered from countless injuries in the past few years. Most recently, Morneau ended his season in late August when he suffered from concussion-like symptoms.

Last year Morneau his only .227 with four home runs and 16 doubles. His last game appearance was August 28.

Joe Nathan Leaves for Rangers

The Minnesota Twins just lost their all-time saves leader to the Texas Rangers.

Joe Nathan (37) signed a two-year deal with the Rangers yesterday, which includes a team option for 2014.

Nathan just returned this past season after Tommy John surgery prevented him from taking the mound in 2010. The right-hander made 48 appearances last season, going 2-1 with 14 saves and a 4.84 ERA.

Nathan was stripped of the closer role early in the season when, like many other Twins, he imploded. He won the position back for the end of the year.

Nathan's career has a 48-23 record with 261 saves and a 2.87 ERA in 581 games. Nathan had been in Minnesota since 2004.

I don't know what you guys think, but it seems to me that we keep dumping players and picking up players that are only useful in Triple A? I see a long-term building plan, but also would like some short terms players too... we can't have another 2011 in 2012.

Minnesota Twins Season Tickets

I am a huge Twins fans (hence the blog) and have yet to get season tickets! I am currently in the On Deck Cirlce, but haven't heard anything regarding next year's season tickets.

The Minnesota Twins are attempting to fill the myriad of holes in the team this offseason, starting with pitching staff. The organization claimed left-hander Matt Maloney from the Cincinnati Reds and Jeff Gray from the Seattle Mariners, both off waivers.

Maloney is a 27-year-old that went 0-3 with a 9.16 ERA in eight appearances for the Reds last year. He spent the majority of the season in Triple A, going 7-1 with a 2.99 ERA in 14 appearances, 13 of which were starts.

Gray is a 29-year-old that went 0-0 with a 2.70 ERA in six appearances for the Chicago White Sox before Seattle claimed him in May. There he went 0-1 with a 4.89 ERA in 24 appearances for the Mariners.

There was a release from the Twins stating that both aren't expected to immediately contribute to the club.

This seems strange to me. The Twins drowned last year. We don't need a piece of wood to float on... we need a ship. If we don't start picking up players that can be counted on to contribute immediately, then we're already sunk for next year.

Get your act together, Twins. We need something better than what you've given us so far this offseason.

Twins decline Joe Nathan's Option

The Minnesota Twins appear to be declining the $12.5 million option on Joe Nathan.

Nathan missed all of 2010 following Tommy John elbow surgery and struggled this year, but did pitch all the way down the stretch.

However, it is also reported that the Twins do want Nathan back for 2012, but apparently don't want to pay him that much.

Nathan threw 29 innings with a 3.38 ERA and a 28/5 K/BB ratio from late June through the end of season, but Nathan's velocity was below his pre-surgery levels. Nathan is a 37-year-old entering a saturated market of veteran closers.

My Target Field Experience: Game 1

If you recall (and if you don't, its below...) my last post was a foreshadow of my Game 1 adventure at Target Field. Last night was the actual adventure.

The night got off to a rough start as I walked in and they didn't have my name on the list or have a nametag for me. I'm willing to help a guy out, but come on. First you don't have season tickets for me, then you don't have my nametag? Lucky my Type A personality was ready for anything, resulting in me bringing my confirmation email and my Twins Account #.

If that hadn't worked, then my hostile personality would've kicked in and had a meltdown. Fortunately for the gentleman at the table, the confirmation email did the trick.

We (Mara and I) got to the Legends Club just in time to see Dave St. Peter get grilled about the growing payroll and the receding wins. His answers were very political, which is absolutely what I expected, but still interesting to hear. It was kind of like Occupy Target Field - fans giving their opinions on The Man. There were other interesting questions, but one that particularly peeked my interest was a question about 2nd base.

St. Peter THREW Nishioka under the bus. Hardcore. It was brutal. He basically said Nishi would have to earn his spot on the team during Spring Training (duh), but that they fully expect Casilla to be playing at 2nd and will be looking for a fresh player at shortstop. So... basically this guy is willing to go out and break a leg for the Twins (literally) and we won't even grant him support as he attempts to transition. Sure, it was a rough year for him and for everyone. He played terrible and couldn't make simple catches or execute easy throws, but does that mean we give up on him?

If so, then we should have given up on the whole team a while ago.

Dave also talked a bit about moving Justin Morneau off the field and solely into a DH role. Sucks.

Anyway, back to my experience. It was great. The night really turned around after the nametag incident. There was a free ballpark food buffet and beers were only $4.50. The view was amazing with the centerfield screen lit up with Game 1. It was like an oasis in the blacked-out stadium with the Minneapolis skyline to the right. How poetic.

Towards the end of the night we went on a tour of Target Field. Let me tell you... that Champions Club is no joke. It is pretty sweet. When we were just outside the Club, our tour guide told us a story about how when the Yankees are in town, Yankee fans will fly in and purchase Champ Club tickets because they think they are such a deal. Kind of irked me because the tickets are expensive, it doesn't matter what some Yank thinks.

As the tour progressed, we got to see the underground batting cages as well as the Twins clubhouse. Interesting fact: Mauer and Morneau have the two biggest 'cubbies' (or lockers) in the whole place. They are easily twice the size of everyone else's. What is that about? The less you play the more you get? Sounds like something Michelle Bachmann would say.

Anyway, the whole experience was a lot of fun. My only disappointment of the night hinged on a bet that I made with Mara regarding the outcome of the game and the series as a whole. I put $50 on the Rangers winning it all and a beer on the Rangers winning Game 1. At least I still have the $50 to look forward to.

If I remember, I'll post some pictures of the tour and such at a later date. We weren't supposed to take pictures of the clubhouse, but I was sneaky and managed a blurry one. NBD.

Game 1 at Target Field!

Though I didn't get to have Twins season tickets this past year (huge disappointment), I guess being in the On Deck Circle does have a few perks.I will be taking advantage of one of those perks this Wednesday as I head to Target Field to watch Game 1 of the World Series in the Delta SKY360 Legends Club!

I get to watch the big game from the comfort of the Legends Club on HD TV screens throughout the club and also on the giant HD scoreboard in center field. The Twins will be giving away prizes such as framed autographed prints and game-used items! Not only that, but there will be a complimentary ballpark fare buffet, a discounted cash bar, and mini-tours of Target Field including the Champions Club and the Twins Clubhouse!!!

I AM SO EXCITED!

Bill Smith Admits Offseason is Critical

You better believe it when I say I'm keeping one eye on the Twins throughout this offseason. Not only that, but I'm willing to bet I'm not the only fan doing so with the Twins Territory fan base being very unaccustomed to the kind of season that just ended.

Sure, fans showed up game after game, tallying over 3 million strong for a second straight season, but that patience and goodwill waivered. We, meaning Twins fans, won't be so 'Minnesota nice' come next season...

Bill Smith said in a press conference a day after the season ended that he and the front office had a lot of heavy lifting to do in the offseason. No kidding?

We are going to need our negotiation skills and knowledge of the free agent markets this offseason more than ever. Last year we made minimal changes; this year needs to be more drastic. We need to bounce back in a way that will please Twins fans and shock the AL Central.

I won't accept anything less and, after all, I am the Gold Standard.

Minnesota Twins Have Surgeries

The Minnesota Twins sure know how to throw a postseason party... consider their theme: "Feel the Pain Friday."

Justin Morneau, Ben Revere and Nick Blackburn all went under the knife to clean up some of their injuries bothering them throughout the season. Mind you, these are three of many, many injuries that contributed to the Twins' almost-100-loss season. All three are expected to be ready for the start of spring training in February.

Yea... I've heard that before. Those boys better be ready considering the recent email I received from the Twins (see previous post). No matter how masochistic Twins fans are, you really shouldn't try to beat our heads into the wall. I guess they've got me right where they want me... My heart will never leave Twins Territory!

Anyway, here is to a happy recovery

Twins Close in on 100 Losses

Here it is. The Minnesota Twins have two options: win their final two games of the year or reach 100 and/or 101 losses.

I should've warned you this wouldn't be pretty.

Right now the Twins, coming off a 7-3 loss against Kansas City, are sitting (or laying down) at 61-99 which is just one loss short of a coma.

The Twins have only ever had a 100-loss season in Minnesota, which took place in 1962. They came to Minnesota in 1961.

The other day I received an email from the Twins organization regarding my 2012 season ticket deposit as an On Deck Circle member. Sure, I love the Twins enough to try for season tickets again. In fact, this season was so terrible I know that next year can only be an improvement. Look at that... optimism. I never do that.

It would be nice if they lowered the prices for next year... but I guess not everyone is a poor college student. Just poor blue-color workers.

Ozzie Guillen Leaving AL Central

This is relevant to the Twins because I think Gardenhire and Guillen are actually friends in real life.

Alright Chicago. Let me tell you this: Ozzie Guillen is one crazy SOB, but he also wins games. He is temperamental and difficult to play for. He is also the only Chicago manager in the last 90 years to lead a Chicago team to a World Series title.

Out of the eight seasons as the White Sox manager, the team has held a winning record five times. Just once during those same eight seasons have the Sox lost more than 90 games.

Sure, the Sox sucked this year. So did the whole AL Central with the exception of Justin Verlander. Stuff happens. The Twins are closing in on 100 wins? You think your season is bad?

Guillen was probably one big fat migraine. The new manager probably will be less of one, but that comes at a price. The new manager is certain to be less colorful and will be lucky if he can lead the White Sox to as many wins as Guillen did.

Guillen will be taking a job with the Florida Marlins after being released from his White Sox contract.

Actually, there has been a lot of relocation to Florida... just see the AL Wildcard.

Minnesota Twins Bumming Me Out

The Minnesota Twins are facing a 12-game losing streak if they don't win today.

The score is tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 7th and the Minnesota Twins look to be flirting with a win.

Kevin Slowey knows that feeling. The Twins went into the Mariners game with a ten game losing streak that they looked to end as Kevin Slowey started off hot. He threw a 1-2-3 first. He threw a 1-2-3 second. He threw a 1-2-3 third, and after pitching around an error and throwing a 2-3-4 fourth, he threw a 1-2-3 fifth. Five innings and the Mariners were without a hit.

The Mariners began the sixth with two outs under their belt quickly. Then Ichiro snapped Slowey's bid for a no-no with an infield single. After that, the score deficit was cut in half. Four pitches later, the game was tied. Then the game was over with the Twins on the bottom. Again.

The Twins are still bumming me out. I was hoping AL Central, AL Champs, World Series Champs... I was all in. Season ticket deposit and everything. Now I'm broke and without a winning team.

Next year? You better believe it.

Minnesota Twins Approach 100 Losses

The Twins are slowly crawling to the end of their disastrous season. If Gardenhire had been told during spring training that his team would be closing in on 100 losses, he would have asked what we were smoking.

The Minnesota Twins only have one team in history to reach triple-digit-losses.

Another quote from Gardy, "You have to cope with them (injuries) the best you can. We haven't done a very good job of coping with all the injuries. I read earlier in the season where the Twins didn't have a Plan B. Plan B to replace the whole lineup? I don't think too many teams have that."

Jim Thome Stepping Back Into the MN Batters Box

Jim Thome will be returning to Target Field with the Indians pretty soon here and its about time you get ready.

September 16-19, the Twins will host the Indians at Target Field. With it seeming like both teams are out of contention, the game has lost its playoff excitement, but you can bet fans will still turn up to Target Field in the masses.

Spots for the Minnesota Twins starting pitching rotation in 2012 are up for grabs. With the team clearly out of contention for a playoff spot, it's time for the team to look for some pitchers who can contribute for next season.

Liam Hendriks hasn't been very impressive in the minors so don't expect him to be great in the majors. Here are is how he performed in the minors.

Hendriks went 8-2 with a 2.70 ERA at Class AA New Britain and then 4-4 with a 4.56 ERA at Class AAA Rochester before getting promoted Sunday, racking up 111 strikeouts and only 21 walks in 139 1/3 innings between the two stops.

I expect him to pitch poorly but it should be fun to watch.

White Sox Sweep Twins

It's going to be a long, depressing September for the Minnesota Twins. The Minnesota Twins are in last place and the lineup does not look good at all. There is nothing worse than watching horrible September baseball, and it looks like that is what we're in for for the next month.

The Twins participated in a day-night double header and got beat in both games. They did not look good at all. The team is now 58-83. I hope they lose less than 95 games but it's looking like they're going to lose around that many games. Sad times for the Twins.

Justin Verlander Just Kills the Twins

Poor Twins. The Twins had their best chance in the first inning when they had two runners on with one out. Verlander got out of the jam and looked to be in some trouble when he had already thrown 60 pitches through three innings Clearly, that wasn't the case. He buckled down and dominated the Twins lineup and they were toast from there. Manager Ron Gardenhire seemed to agree with my analysis.

"You saw us get dominated by Verlander over there," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He was pretty filthy."

Verlander has two wins in two starts against the Twins this season with a 1.15 ERA.

Jim Thome Hits 600th Home Run

Delmon Young Traded to Tigers

Delmon Young was traded to the Twins' AL Central rival Detroit Tigers on Monday and did not disappoint in his debut with his new team. In his first at bat against Francisco Liriano, Young hit a home run in his first at bat as a Tiger. It was only Young's 5th home run of the season and Young finished the night 2-4 with just the RBI from the home run.

Young was traded for a minor league pitcher in Class A who has an ERA just south of 5 and was a former 10th round pick. Some trade...

The Twins won the game 9-6 and Young was barely the story of the night. Jim Thome hit his 599th and 600th home runs last night to join the 600 home run club. Thome had not hit a home run since August 4th. The Detroit Tigers honored him by posting a congratulatory message on the scoreboard after he hit number 600. Thome also received a standing ovation from the Detroit Tigers fan as he rounded the bases.

Justin Morneau Set to Return Monday Night

Justin Morneau is hitting the stuffing out of the ball as of lately. Morneau has been rehabbing from his injured neck in Triple A and has been on a tear. He is 8-14 in his last three games and is getting really excited about coming back and playing for the Twins. He is expected to play Monday night against Detroit. Morneau wishes he was getting back sooner:

"Everybody who's come up here not ready hasn't helped us, so we're going to try to make sure he's ready," Gardenhire said. "I know he's champing at the bit. He texted [Bill Smith] that he's going to be here [Wednesday] to face Lester. Billy told him see you in Detroit [next Monday]."

I love it! I can't wait for Morneau to get back in the lineup. I know the Twins are pretty much out of it this year, but it will be good if Morneau can get back in the groove of baseball so that he is ready for next season. He hasn't played consistently for so long that it would be nice if he could just get his legs under him.

Denard Span Not at 100% Yet

Twins' Outfielder Denard Span only has one hit in his 24 at bats since returning from the disabled list so the Twins gave him the day off on Tuesday to get his head straight. Ben Revere started in his place and played really well for the team. Here were manager Ron Gardenhire's thoughts on Span's day off.

"[Span's] still coming back from that [concussion]," Gardenhire said. "It's not perfect. He still has his moments. I talk to him daily, and today was a good day. Seeing the ball -- he talked about not really seeing the spin real good yet ... We'll back him off and see where we go from there."

I would like to see Span get in a little bit of a groove before the season ends. It's pretty important that he plays well because Ben Revere has played well enough to challenge for playing time and the Twins have plenty of depth in the outfield.

Scott Baker Heads to Disabled List

Scott Baker has been placed on the disabled list and the Twins will call up Kevin Slowey from Triple A to start for the Twins this Sunday against the Cleveland Indians. Baker was placed on the disabled list because of a strained flexor muscle. This is the same injury that forced him to be on the disabled list in July. He won't throw a baseball until the Twins return from their next road trip on August 18th.

Slowey will be making his first major league start since September of 2010. Ron Gardenhire thought it would be better to have Slowey start than have Anthony Swarzak take Baker's place in the rotation.

"Honestly, when you've got a pitcher down there like Slowey, who's throwing the ball well and healthy ... this is the right thing," Gardenhire said. "Just bring Slowey up, slide him into the rotation, keep Swarzy where he's done really well."

Twins Commemorate '91 World Championship

The Minnesota Twins will be commemorating the '91 World Championship win over the Atlanta Braves. The team was led from last place in 1990 to first a year later by Kirby Puckett and jack Morris.

In honor of the 20th anniversary, the Twins will celebrate Friday through Sunday at Target Field while they host a series against the Chicago White Sox.

I think the Twins-White Sox series is the perfect series during which to commemorate the most recent Twins World Championship. Being crowd the world champion is about team dominance over all others in the league. With the White Sox quickly becoming the Twins' perpetual door mat, what could give a better correlation to that '91 championship?

I can't wait to see what the Twins ball club has in store for the celebrations!

Denard Span Abandons DL

The Minnesota Twins have activated Denard Span from the 15-day disabled list following their most recent loss against the Oakland Athletics.

Span has been the subject of several trade deadline rumors, but will join the Twins when they travel to Anaheim to open the Twins-Angels series on Tuesday. Monday is an off day/travel day for the Twins.

Span has been on the disabled list since June 9, when he was placed on the list because of a concussion. He has appeared in 56 games with the Twins, batting .294 with nine doubles, three triples, two home runs and 15 RBIs.

Luke Hughes has been sent down to Triple-A Rochester to make room for Span on the Twins 25-man roster.

It will be interesting to see how Gardenhire handles the playing time between Ben Revere and Denard Span!

The Minnesota Twins will be trying to win this series in Arlington, Texas tonight by winning 3 of 4 games. Well, they have the perfect guy to do it tonight. Scott Baker is pitching tonight for the Minnesota Twins. Baker has won his last five decisions and says he is feeling much better after sitting out with elbow soreness before the All Star break.

Baker will face a loaded Texas Ranger lineup and his pitching counter part is Matt Harrison. Harrison is having a very solid season. He is 8-7 with a 3.05 ERA. Thankfullly Scott Baker is coming off a stretch where he is 6-1 with a 1.50 ERA in his last seven starts.

Baker only threw 82 pitches in his last outing against Detroit in which he last 5 innings and gave up no runs.

Matt Harrison is 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA in two starts against Minnesota.

Danny Valencia Saves Season With Walk Off Single, Closer Thoughts

It looked like the Twins' season was all but over. Casilla flew out to left field, and Mauer was up to bat with one out. The Twins' were about to be 8 games back in the division, and likely would be trading key players at the deadline, but the Twins' fought back in a huge way, just like they have been doing all season. Mauer walked, and Cuddyer hit what looked like a single, but become a double because of his hustle. The Indians intentionally walked Jim Thome, bringing up Danny Valencia. Valencia hits a dinky fly ball to left field that drops and Cuddyer rounds third to score the game winning run. This is a huge win for the Twins that brought them to 6 games back of the 1st place Indians. They have to win again tonight if they want to keep their hopes alive.

Matt Capps pitched again last night and looked better than before. He clearly cannot handle the mental grind that comes with being a closer, as he leads Major League baseball with 18 blown saves over the past year. I think Joe Nathan is improving, but I would love to see Glen Perkins close. He's got closer stuff, the only thing you have to worry about with him is his mental toughness. He shouldn't have to worry about the mental part because when you are throwing a filthy slider along with a 97 mph fastball, you should be just fine. Gardy, just give him a shot, please.

I Went to the Game Last Night and

Wow! What a game. First of all, I was absolutely positive we were going to lose after the first inning. Once Liriano gets off to a Shaky start, you can pretty much count on him to be pretty bad for the rest of the game. I was partially right, he still couldn't throw a strike to save his life, but he threw enough good pitches to get himself through the game. The first four innings were god awful. The Twins kept threatening but couldn't get any timely hitting. That all changed when Danny Valencia stepped to the plate with Michael Cuddyer on first base. He hit a huge double that would give the Twins their first lead. The Twins weren't done just yet, Smelmon Young got another hit, scoring a run. Lastly, Trevor Plouffe it a two run moon shot (pictured left receiving high fives after his homer last night).

My favorite part about this? This was all done with two outs. We couldn't get a big hit the whole game, and then three people stepped up one after another. this was a game the Twins should have lost because of the shaky start they got from Liriano and because of the two errors they committed (really three, if you count that grounder Nishioka bobbled that was ruled a hit). So congrats to the Twins on a big game last night and hopefully they keep it up and can sweep the Royals.

All Star Weekend Thoughts: How to Change it and How Cuddyer Did

Alright so the first part of this is going to be how to change the All Star game. Second part will be about Cuddyer. First lets start with the home run derby. I really hate the home run derby it's really boring. I've got two ways to fix it, either would be great. One way would be to have the reigning Cy Young winner actually pitch to these guys so it's not like batting practice. Another way to fix it, have the captains be forced to pick one pitcher. Pick some interesting people to spice it up. I would love to watch CC Sabathia try to beat out all the Sluggers in a home run derby, I bet he'd have a chance. Or watch little Tim Lincecum try to hit some home runs. I hate when there are just mediocre power hitters that I don't care about. Spice it up, maybe even throw Nick Punto out there for all I care. The Last thing they have to do is trim that damn roster. I was watching it last night and didn't know half the players by the 7th inning. Make the best players play and if you want it to matter, make them play the whole game. There's no reason these guys can't play a whole game, it's baseball, not football.

Cuddyer, I loved seeing you out there, but you are not an all star. Cuddyer was an all star because they had to pick someone to be on the team, and he was the best of the worst. This devalues an All Star appearance. Who cares if Joe Mauer has made 10 all star appearances because everyone makes all star teams in baseball. There were 84 players named to the all star teams this year. Only ten guys can be on the field at once... this is ridiculous.

Michael Cuddyer wasn't too bad out there though. He played a solid first base, and he flew out on the first pitch he saw. Clearly he was a little nervous and I don't blame him. Hopefully Mauer and Morneau are healthy and productive next year so we can watch them in the All Star Game.

Michael Cuddyer was named to his first All Star team recently. I can honestly say I'm really happy for they guy. He's having a career year. He's leading the team with a .298 batting average, 13 home runs, 93 hits, and a .369 on base percentage. He was clearly the most deserving position player that the Twins had to be named to the All Star team. He's in the midst of his 10th Major League season, all with the Twins, and he has been rock solid the past five seasons, outside of 2008 when he played in only 49 games.

I'm happy for Cuddy. This is going to be a great moment for him and his family and the Twins organization. I love Cuddyer, but I would much rather see Morneau or Mauer out there. Even though they aren't having the best seasons, I like seeing the traditional Twins out there that everyone else knows. Barely anyone even knows who Cuddyer is. I'll have my thoughts on the All Star game in my next blog.

Minnesota Twins Face Phil Humber Thursday Night

Remember when the Twins traded Johan Santana to the New York Mets for three prospects? Remember that two of them were supposed to contribute immediately? Remember their names? Carlos Gomez and Phil Humber ringing any bells?

It's been three years since the Twins made that trade. No one from that trade has done anything. The Twins could have had Jon Lester or Jacoby Ellsbury, but opted against them. Gomez was terrible from the beginning. The Twins gave up on Humber after the 2009 season. He spent a season with the Royals, mostly in Triple A when the Chicago White Sox picked him up.

Chicago's pitching coach suggested that he add a slider and it has worked miracles for him. He is 8-4 with a 2.69 ERA and could be named to the All Star team later this week. Something the Twins could desperately need.

Don't blame the Twins for getting rid of this guy. He was mentally unstable when they had him and wasn't a shell of the pitcher he is today. They couldn't have really thought that he would develop into an All Star talent during his first year as a full time starter in the league as a 28 year old.

Joe Mauer Playing First Base Tomorrow

According to the Startribune, Joe Mauer is playing first base tomorrow. This is great news for the Twins because it allows Mauer to get some more at bats and rest his body. Mauer hasn't played first base in ten years, but he's gotten some help from teammates. He said he has spent a lot of time talking to Michael Cuddyer about how to play first base. Mauer had this to say about playing 1st base tomorrow.

"I want to do anything I can to help the team," said Mauer. "Obviously for me personally, it’s going to be a grind the rest of the way, physically. So if this allows me to take a day from behind the plate and give your body a little break, it’ll be a good thing."

Gardy thought he looked okay out there"

“We won’t really know until we get him over there and see, but honestly he’s pretty fluid over there,” Gardenhire said. “He’s got soft hands, he moves around there pretty well, all the fundamental parts of it.”

It's about time Mauer starts to sacrifice to the team. He needs to realize how important his bat and his health are to this teams success. There's no place for his selfishness. Don't be afraid to DH or play some first base every once in awhile.

Very Cool Twins Game Tonight, Matchup of Aces

Scott Baker is 6-5 with a 3.15 ERA heading into this match up against the Tampa Bay Rays. Thankfully for the Twins, Baker has pitched extremely well at home as of late and more importantly, he has pitched extremely well versus the Tampa Bay Rays. Baker has a 1.89 ERA at Target Field and has won four of his five starts at Target Field. Baker is looking to help the Twins stay hot after a 7-0 win yesterday against the Rays in which Duensing threw a six hitter. Minnesota Twins manager had this to say about Bakers recent success:

"He's confident and he's attacking," Gardenhire said. "I don't think he worries about too much out there. He just goes and attacks.

He'll need to keep that up tonight if he wants to beat the Rays. He's going up against All Star James Shields who is having an amazing season. He has a 2.45 ERA and is 8-5.

Twins with Huge Wins Over the Weekend

The Twins had two very impressive wins this weekend after a crushing defeat. Earlier in the week, the Twins lost by blowing a 7 run lead. Matt Capps of course had an extremely rough outing and the Twins blew a huge lead.

Fast forward to this weekend. Twins get a huge win over Zach Greinke and the Milwaukee Brewers. Greinke is a certified ace and had done really well against the Twins in the past, but struggles a little bit on the road.

The Twins then got a series with the Rays off to a great start. They faced a for sure All Star and ace of the of Tampa Bay Rays pitching staff in David Price. They knocked him around early, scoring 4 runs in the first three innings. All in all it was a great outing for Twins and hopefully they can keep up this momentum.

Scott Baker Turning into a True Ace for the Twins

Baker turned in another gem on Thursday. He threw 7 1/3 innings of shutout baseball as the Twins beat the poor Dodgers 1-0, a nice birthday present to Nathan Johnson. With this performance, Baker lowered his season ERA to 3.15. The reason? His command of his pitches has been so much better. Remember when Baker was throwing meat balls right down the middle of the plate last year? Yeah he is not doing that anymore.

The interesting part of this for me is: does this make Liriano expendable? I think the answer to that question is yes but it's tough to tell if the Twins believe that. They love Liriano, but he doesn't really pitch like how they like their pitchers to pitch. The Twins want guys who pound the strike zone and don't walk anyone. Liriano's command has been really shaky ever since Tommy John surgery.

I hope they don't trade Liriano, but with Baker looking like an ace it becomes a distinct possibility. With the Twins falling out of contention, it looks more and more likely that they'll trade some veterans. Liriano is going to be a free agent next year, as is Cuddyer which means those two would be the most likely to go. Others who could go are: Thome, Kubel, and Young

Joe Mauer Takes Grounders at First Base, It's About Time!

Joe Mauer took grounders at first base yesterday and Ron Gardenhire was right next to him the whole time giving the 3 time batting champion advice.

With injuries to Delmon Young and Justin Morneau, there is a big hole at first base. Cuddyer is needed in the outfield because Span and Young are injured, leaving Luke Hughes to play first base. No one is asking Mauer to become a full time first baseman, but with so many injuries on this team, they can't afford to have his bat out of the line up, which is why Gardenhire has suggested that he play some first base so that he can avoid the rigors of catching, while still being able to stay in the line up.

Message to Mauer: The Twins are paying you 180 millions dollars. You are the face of this franchise and this team. If you don't sacrifice for the better of the team, than who will. You're not a great public speaker so lead by example. You need to be tough and show that you'll do whatever it takes to win because this team desperately needs you not to take off days right now with your mysterious injuries. An injured Joe Mauer is better than most substitutions Gardy is going to be able to put out there.

Sorry I Think I Jinxed the Minnesota Twins

Every since I started talking about how well the Twins are playing, they have started to slide a little. From now on, I'll just give normal previews so that they stop losing. It's only a two game losing streak but it's significant nonetheless.

To recap last night: Tim Lincecum was back to his normal dominating self last night. I feel like I'm entirely responsible for that because I said that he was pitching poorly as of late. Of course he throws a gem right after I say that. The Twins didn't score any runs against Lincecum as threw 7 shutout innings. The Twins only got four hits on the night and scored their one run in the ninth inning.

Twins are now in Milwaukee and will be looking to redeem themselves. Hopefully they'll get back to their normal selves. Scott Baker will be pitching against Randy Wolf. Baker is 5-4 with a 3.24 ERa and randy Wolf is 5-4 with a 3.15 ERA. Baker has been pitching really well lately and they need him to stop this mini losing streak that we're on. Go Twins!!

Twins San Francisco Giants Game 3 Preview

Tonight is a pivotal game for the Twins. After losing last night and ending their 8 game winning streak, they dropped to 7.5 games back in the AL Central race. The Tigers, White Sox, and Indians all won their games last night so it is important for the Twins to bounce back tonight. A small problem is that they will be going up against former NL Cy Young award winner Tim Lincecum. Luckily for the Twins, Lincecum is having a very sub par season for his standards. He's 5-6 with a 3.39 ERA. The Twins are sending Brian Duensing to the hill tonight and he's been pretty poorly this year with a 4.82 ERA but he is has been pitching better as of late. The twins should be able to get this win. Lincecum isn't pitching that well lately and some key Twins are still getting healthy. Look for Mauer and Nishioka to improve as they continue to get healthier.

Twins End Winning Streak in San Fransisco

The Twins ended their 8 game win streak last night against the San Francisco Giants. Surprisingly, it was Nick Blackburn to the end the streak even though he has been unbelievable during the month of June. Twins played some pretty spotty defense last night, but I thought they just couldn't get any timely hitting. The Twins will be back at it tonight against the Giants. They're facing Tim Lincecum who has not been pitching well so he hopefully he keeps that up tonight and the Twins get a win.

Twins Players Feel Like it's '06

Twins players have been talking about how feels like 06 because of the hot streak they're on and the confidence they are playing with. I hate to say it, but that team had ridiculous talent at the front of the rotation with Francisco Liriano (who was pitching out of his mind) and Johan Santana. This team does have the same scrappy feel to it as that 06 team.

I really think this team can compete for the playoffs. No one in the AL Central is strong and the team is really starting to hit its stride. The only team I'm a little worried about is the Detroit Tigers. They have talent at the front of their rotation with Scherzer, Verlander, and Porcello, but I don't think their line up is very good at all. The Twins lineup is going to be really good once everyone comes back, especially if Ben Revere continues to see some time in left field. With a little luck they'll be find because Detroit is going to have to stumble a little bit for this team to have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs. Thankfully the division is really weak this year, but if the Twins don't make it, it's obvious that the very slow start is to blame.

In other news, Joe Mauer is playing today! That should give the Twins a nice boost. Hopefully he has his legs back under him and the Twins can continue this hot streak with him behind the plate.

Gardenhire Facing Tough Decisions: Who Will Sit?

With Joe Mauer, Jason Kubel, Denard Span, Justin Morneau, Nishioka and Jim Thome on the DL, a lot of players have stepped in and made cases for playing time. This has been a valuable time for players such as Luke Hughes, Ben Revere, Drew Butera, and Jason Repko have earned a lot more playing time. This leaves for some uncomfortable decisions for Gardenhire. Too big decisions he'll have to make will be about Luke Hughes and Ben Revere. Hughes is clearly out playing Danny Valencia and likewise for Ben Revere over Delmon Young.

There just aren't enough at bats in this line up for Revere once Span and Kubel come back. That means the outfield is loaded with Cuddyer, who is playing very well, Kubel, Young, Span, and Revere. That's just not enough at bats for Revere. Which brings up my suggestion, sit Young for Revere. Revere is hitting so much better than Young and even though it takes away some power, Revere has been doing a great job getting on base. My guess is, the more at bats he gets, the more comfortable he'll be playing at this level. I expect Revere to be a .300 hitter on this team.

As for Hughes. He is clearly outplaying Danny Valencia. The problem here is, the Twins believe Valencia is the answer at 3rd base for the future. Well here's my opinion, he isn't the future. We need more run production from that spot and that we need more power from the position. Hughes isn't going to provide that either, but he is hitting much better than Valencia so we should play him the rest of the year. I'm not too worried about Valencia's confidence because I don't think he's the answer at 3rd base. Please prove me wrong Danny.

Gardy Loves Revere

Ben Revere has played so well during his stint in the majors that he has earned the respect of the Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire. Revere covers a lot of ground in the outfield, makes a lot of contact, and runs the bases extremely well. His growth makes other players on the Twins expendable (I'm looking at you, Michael Cuddyer). Revere replaced Span in the lineup since he has been out with a concussion. Revere has a lot of the same qualities as Span. Span claims he has a stronger arm, but knows that he can't beat Revere in one category.

"He’s quicker than I am,’’ Span said. "His first step, he gets to full speed. As for me, the third or fourth step is when I get going. I think that’s the biggest difference between the two of us.’’

Revere is a career .327 hitter in the minors, so his performance in the majors is no fluke. Look for the Twins to move either him or Span at some point considering they bring a lot of the same things to the table.

Minnesota Twins Draft Many, Many Pitchers

As the old axiom goes, you can never have enough pitching in baseball. The Twins took that to heart as they used twenty-one of their twenty-nine selections on pitchers that they hope can make an impact in the Twins' future games. Those twenty-one are just what the Twins had as of Day Two of the 2011 MLB Draft.

Of the twenty-one pitchers, 13 are from the college ranks, 2 of them from junior colleges, and 6 are currently in high school.

Other than pitchers, the Twins have drafted four short stops, one center fielder and one catcher.

Denard Span in Vertigo

Denard Span has missed some playing time from the feeling of vertigo combined with neck pain and a headache after a collision at home with Kansas City Royals catcher Brayan Pena. Span collided at home with Pena after attempting to stretch a trip in to an inside-the-park home fun in the fourth inning at Kauffman Stadium.

Every bat since that collision Span has described as a "blur". In 2009, Span experienced similar symptoms from an inner ear infection, without the neck and head pain.

I really hope we don't have another Percy Harvin on our hands.

Even though Span was check in Kansas by a medical team and was determined to not have a concussion, he will be checked again back in Minnesota. The MLB recently instituted a seven-day disabled list for players suffering from concussions, but Span cannot be placed on that list unless he is diagnosed as having a concussion.

Alexi Casilla brings the Latino Heat

In the month of May, it seems as if Alexi Casilla has found his inner confidence because as a hitter Casillia has been en fuego (That’s not copy righted by Dan Patrick, is it?).

Check out his stats for the month of May: .310 Batting Average, .375 On Base Percentage and .466 Slugging Percentage.

That being said, this isn’t the first time we have seen Casilla channel his inner Latino Heat. Casilla is notoriously known as a streaky player, both in the field and at the plate. And while I love what I am seeing from Casilla, especially in the last five games, it is very unlikely he keeps this hot streak up. Nonetheless let’s hope he can go back to his 2008 form where he batted .281.

I lived through the Marty Cordova era

I lived through the dark ages of Twins baseball. Yes, I am talking about the Marty Cordova Era. You see I was born in 1992, the last winning season the Twins would have until 2001. And while they had a winning season in 1992, for me personally I don’t recognize it because I was 1 years old and had no idea what baseball was.

Let’s fast foreword to when I am three, the age I figured out the difference between winners and losers. So it is 1995 when I am three and when I watch the Twins, all the while understanding what is going on for the first time they are absolutely sucking. From 1995 to 2000, my first five years of watching baseball I thought it was an absolute joke in Minnesota. You might not believe this now, but when I was a kid I looked at the Timberwolves in a higher respect than the Twins. But when you think about that makes sense. From 1995 to 2000 the T-Wolves made the playoffs 4 out of those five years. Meanwhile the Twins would have a combined record of 404-548 (.424 winning percentage, a worse winning percentage than their 2000 season when they went 69-93). That being said the Minnesota sports world would change in 2001 and something foreign to me occurred: The Twins were good.

In 2001 they almost made the playoff, coming in second in the AL Central Standings. All of sudden my thoughts on the Twins changed. Minnesota has a good MLB Baseball team? What the heck is going on!! And then in 2002 season another strange thing happened. Ron Gardenhire became the manager. While most Twins fans were sad to see Tom Kelly go, and were skeptical of Ron Gardenhire, I was ecstatic! As far as I was concerned it was a good thing. I wanted Tom Kelly out! Remember: I simply knew him as the guy with funny glasses that posted a five year winning percentage of .424. (Obviously my thoughts have now changed and I now hold Mr. Kelly in a high regard, but at the time I think it is understandable why I didn’t.)

In 2002, I turn 10, and just as I begin my new decade the Twins give me the greatest birthday present of all: A birth to the playoffs and a series win. I went my first ever baseball playoff games that year and boy were they fun. The A’s series which we came back from down 2-1., yeah I went to games three and four. And game four was truly electric. It was a must win game for the Twins and they played it like it was a must win game as they destroyed the A’s 11-2. Unfortunately they wound up loosing to the Angels in the ALCS , but nonetheless, two very special things came about from that season: 1. my love for the Twins. 2. My hatred towards rally monkeys

And now as I watch the Twins today I can’t help but have horrible flashbacks to the Marty Cordova era. I realize there is a three year old little chubby un-athletic St. Paul boy who is thinking the same thoughts I had when I was watching the Twins at that age. Sure people tell him Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau are good, but he doesn’t believe it, just I like I didn’t believe it when people told me Tom Kelly was a good manager.

Are the Twins going through another Dark Age? Possibly, but honestly I don’t know. At least I have already lived through one Dark Age and know what to expect. I mean nothing can be worse than the Marty Cordova era. Absolutely nothing.

Remembering Killebrew

Before I begin writing this blog post I need clarify the following: the text you are about to read below is not, I repeat NOT, about selling tickets or anything like that. This post is much more important than that. This post is being made to inform those that feel inclined to pay tribute to the late great Harmon Killebrew. Now then onto to the post.

For those who wish to attend, this Thursday at 7:10 pm at Target, The Harmon Killebrew Tribute will take place. According to the Twins website the event is free and open to the public. Meaning those that wish to attend may do so.

Twins Broadcasters Dick Bremer and John Gordon will emcee the event. Speakers who are scheduled to speak at the tribute include MLB Commissioner Alan H. "Bud" Selig, National Baseball Hall of Famers Rod Carew and Paul Molitor, Twins legends Jim Kaat and Tony Oliva, and current Twins Michael Cuddyer and Justin Morneau.
The event will also include musical and video tributes in celebration of Killebrew's life.

Gates will open at 6 p.m. and seating will be general admission. Ballpark concessions will be open, and attendees will receive a commemorative program. Fans can come early to check out Killebrew's National Baseball Hall of Fame plaque. It will be on display from noon to 6:30 p.m. on Target plaza near the Killebrew statue.

Twins need to get back to their roots

Well the three game winning streak, which sounds like a blast from the past, didn’t mean anything. The Twin’s went back to their loosing ways and honestly I don’t even know why anymore. I take that back I sort of know why, but I can’t point out a definitive answer when you look at all the reasons why they suck.

1. Injuries

Sure, we can say because of injuries but when you checkout the lineup they put out last night, it sounds like one they put out a year ago when they were good. I guess the good news is Mauer and Nishioka, according to reports, are nearly ready for games. Yea, I am nearly ready for the Twins to be good. I will believe when I see it.

2. Pitching and batting, but mostly pitching

Yes we stink at hitting, we rank dead last in runs and yes we stink at pitching, we ranked dead last in ERA and second to last in opponent’s batting average. And yes, when looking at those stats it makes sense why we suck. However, for as long I have watched Twins the team’s formula for success is this: pitching and defense wins games. And quite frankly the last time the Twins won a playoff series, which was in 2002, they didn’t have a single player hit more than 30 homerun, reach100 or more RBIs, and get this, have a player bat over .301 ! Can you believe that?! Hey Twins, get back to your roots of winning games 3-2, 2-1 and the occasional 4-3, instead of loosing games 8-7.

If I was in 4th grade right now the words coming out of the mouth would be this. “Holly guacamole, the Twins are on a three game winning streak, they are back, and they are done loosing they are all about, duh, WINNING! (Start singing Twins song) We’re gonna win Twins we’re gonna score somethin’ somethin’ somethin’ score. Dad, lets buy playoff tickets now! No wait, scratch that, I want to go ride my bike.”

However because I am not in 4th grade, even though some say I still act like a 4th grader, my reaction is this:

Before we start going crazy like Stan Marsh after Barack Obama won the election, or like a bunch of pre-teen girls at a Justin Bieber concert, let’s get our sport hormones in line and start thinking logically:

Its just three games! Three games against teams that aren’t even in our division. If this was against the Tigers or White Sox, then it would be a lot more important.

Again, its just three games! Not 5, not 6, not 7, or even 8, just three little games!

But in all seriousness, just like the rest of you, I also hope this three game streak is sign for better things to come.

That being said, they still haven’t cancelled out there 9 game loosing streak.

Call me when then do. Then maybe I will start acting like a 4th grader.

Put The Trees Back

Players were complaining about it all year last year. Twins players were quoted as saying the tree’s distracted them when they tried to hit. So being the understanding organization that the Twins are, this year those 14 tree’s in outfield are now gone.

Well Twins players, it seems to me like the trees of Target field helped you! Without them all of you, except for Jason Kubel and Jim Thome, have gone down in every positive batting statistic out there!

So I say, put the trees back. Maybe the nice scenery will help you guys hit and win games.

Delmon Young scheduled to be back

After last year’s breakout season Twins fans everywhere had high hopes for outfielder Delmon Young. Unfortunately, the much improved Young suffered a left oblique strain early in the season hasn’t taken a major league at bat since April 18th. Fortunately for Twins fans everywhere Young is scheduled to return this Friday when the Twins take on the Toronto Blue Jays.

If Delmon can get back to last year’s form where he drove in 112 RBI and batted .298 (which is basically .300 in my book) then it will be a much needed offensive boost for the struggling Twins.

Remember: Please don’t call them Twinkies.

When you compare this year’s stats to last year’s stats at this time, it is no wonder the Minnesota Twins are playing so poorly. Just take a look

-the Twins were in last place in all of baseball with only 113 runs scored through 35 games.

-They rank 27th in baseball in batting average and rank dead last in the American League at .231.

-Their RBI total of 101 is dead last in all of baseball

-A year ago, the Twins had a 21-12 first-place record compared to the present record of 12-23.

-Last year the Twins had eight hitters batting over .250. This year, they only have two players batting over .250: Denard Span at .288 and Jason Kubel at .355

-A year ago, the pitching staff had a ERA of 3.56, this the team’s ERA is 4.76

While the old saying goes, stats don’t tell you everything, in the case of the Twins it certainly does this year.

Twins Future: Miguel Sano

Due to injuries the Twins stink this year. I am not saying we should pack it in and give up, it is far too early for that, but it doesn’t mean we can’t look towards the future and be excited for it.

And boy oh boy am I excited for the 16 year old phenom and Dominican Republic import Miguel Sano. The future third baseman, according to scouts is a future star and was ranked the 5th best third base prospect by MLB.com this year and he was only 16! Two years from now he will easily be the number one prospect and in the future he might even be the number one third baseman in the MLB.

So Twins Fans, while the current season might be a downer, the future is looking bright in Miguel Sano.

FRANCISCO LIRIANO THROWS A NO HITTER

Francisco Liriano threw a no hitter on Tuesday night in Chicago against the White Sox in a 1-0 victory. What a great memory for him that will be. How he got his no hitter was something else. He only struck out 2 and walked 6 batters but no hitters were able to scrap together a hit. Liriano was virtually pitching for his spot in the rotation after he came in with an ERA of over 9. I am so happy for Francisco and feel like I have seen him from all the ups and downs throughout his career. Congratulations Franky, you deserve it.

MLB Playoffs Expansion Possible

The MLB may be heading towards expansion for their playoffs in 2012, or at least if Bud Selig has anything to do with it. Apparently the new playoff format would have the two Wild Cards in each league face off in a one or three-game series. The winner would then take the role of the current Wild Card winner, facing the league's first or second seed for a chance to play in the Championship Series.

How do you feel about expanding the playoffs? I personally have always liked that it's very difficult to make the MLB Playoffs. It keeps the top tier teams, with the 3 division winners per league and 1 Wild Card. My opinion is "don't fix it if it ain't broke."

Minnesota Twins Rained Out

The Minnesota Twins have the talent - Mauer, Morneau, Thome, Kubel, Cuddyer, Young, Valencia, Span, Nishioka, etc. We know the 7-12 record is not an indication of what they are capable of. A lot of people will say it's the starting pitching or perhaps the new bullpen. Right now, the offense needs to swing the bats better. Let's just say the Twins have more to be desired in the offensive statistics categories and they will need to do more with the bats. The pitching has not gotten a lot of run support and that is part of the issue. We are 30th in runs scored and that stat must improve. Let's get after it on this homestand.

Minnesota Twins Split With Baltimore Orioles

The Minnesota Twins split a 4 game series with the Baltimore Orioles this week at Camden Yards. The Twins took the opener and the closing game, sandwiched in between were two victories by the Birds. So, after 19 games the Twins sit at 7-12. Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, Delmon Young, and Tsuyoshi Nishioka have been out of the lineup at times, making it a little harder on the manager without his regulars. After an 8 game roadtrip, the Twins will now have a 6 game homestand. They will host the Cleveland Indians for 3 and the red-hot Tampa Bay Rays for 3. The Indians are 13-6 and lead the AL Central. This series is a nice time to gain some ground.

Joe Mauer is on the DL

Joe Mauer has landed on the DL. Just not the way he has landed before. Apparently, he has battled a case of the flu that landed him in the hospital. Then it was reported that he has "bilateral leg weakness", which I have never heard of but seems like fatigue. Like they said on PTI, it's better than trilateral leg weakness. Hopefully Joe can figure out what's draining him right now and can return to his MVP form. He was placed on the 15 day DL so he shouldn't be out for too long.

Tampa Bay Rays Take 3 of 4 From the Minnesota Twins

It wasn't the way the Minnesota Twins had hoped it would go, but at least we finished on a strong note. The Minnesota Twins let 2 victories slip out of their hands and Johnny Damon made them pay. Matt Capps and Joe Nathan both struggled as Carl Pavano and Scott Baker threw gems. Capps has now replaced Nathan for the time being as the Minnesota Twins closer. So, were 15 games in and sitting at 5-10. We have some work to do, but at least we're not the Boston Red Sox.

Next up is a 4 game series at the Baltimore Orioles. Starts tonight. Let's go Twins.

Minnesota Twins Bats Must Come Alive

I am going to take the 3-6 start by the Minnesota Twins with a grain of salt. Meaning, it is a long season and I'm not going to fuss about a 9 game start, just as I wouldn't if we were 9-0. However, it has been the way we've lost that is a little alarming. We simply aren't knocking the ball around like a lot of us believed we would. Our batting average is .214, good for 29th in the league. Our runs and on-base percentage is 29th in the league as well. Hopefully with hosting the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday and Wednesday can change our fortune.

Week One Notes

One week into the season. After one game has been rained out, our record is 2-4. We played at Toronto and New York. Thankfully we have gotten those out of the way now. Those are not two easy places to play, in fact they have been the hardest for the Twins to play at in recent memory. We will now play against Oakland, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, and Baltimore in consecutive series. These are more managable, as I don't think these teams have the firepower that Toronto and New York have. Denard Span has gotten off to a solid start in the leadoff spot and Joe Nathan has converted both of his save opportunities, really glad to see that.

Tsuyoshi Nishioka Breaks His Leg

Tsuyoshi Nishioka broke his leg yesterday while playing against the New York Yankees. As if we didn't already have a curse against them and bad luck, our second basemen now has a broken leg. There is no time table yet, but one can think it will be at least 6 weeks, maybe longer. His leg broke on a play that Nick Swisher was attempting to disrupt a double play. It really wasn't anything dirty, just a play that clipped Nishi's leg and landed on it awkwardly. Here's to hoping for a fast recovery. In the meantime, welcome Luke Hughes.

Pat Neshek Claimed off Waivers by San Diego Padres

Pat Neshek has been claimed off waivers by the San Diego Padres. Neshek has been with the Minnesota Twins since 2006 and is a graduate of Park Center Senior High School in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. Neshek had a breakout 2007 season in which he was chosen to be 1 of the 5 players in the final vote for the All-Star game. He was one of the best relievers in all of baseball in the 2007 season. Unfortunately, Neshek was forced to get Tommy John Surgery in 2009 and missed the entire season. He has an unorthodox delivery but it's one that can also fool hitters. It was reported last week that Scott Baker or Kevin Slowey may be moved to another team in a trade. The Twins currently have 6 guys for 5 spots as well as two nice pitching prospects in Kyle Gibson and Alex Wimmers. It was speculated that the Toronto Blue Jays are interested in Kevin Slowey, so that's something to pay attention to. The rotation currently features Carl Pavano, Brian Duensing, Francisco Liriano, and Nick Blackburn. I have always liked having an extra starter in case someone gets injured, but I guess it's up to the front office if they believe the salary is worth holding on to. It's something to pay attention to.

Justin Morneau is Back

Well, it isn't anything groundbreaking but Justin Morneau returned to playing baseball. As in he played in the field, took some at bats, type of way. He hit a bases clearing double, and for Twins fans, that's huge. We just want to see Justin back and be able to play again. He has been out for a long time, longer than any of us ever anticipated. We hope he can recover and get everything back to the way he was last year. He was on an MVP pace last season before he got injured. Keep up the good work Justin!

The Minnesota Twins officially began the spring training schedule. They took on the Boston Red Sox last night in Fort Myers, Florida. Do these games really mean anything? No, to be honest. However, I'm just itching for baseball season and the schedule started so it got me a little excited. Only a few starters played in the game and a lot of the guys in the lineup probably wouldn't get recognized by a casual Minnesota Twins fan. Really wish I was in Fort Myers, Florida right now.

Tsuyoshi Nishioka Has Large Following in Spring Training

The Minnesota Twins have a new infielder this season. Many of us have no idea what to expect from this new infielder. Tsuyoshi Nishioka joins the Minnesota Twins and will platoon the middle infield with Alexi Casilla. One thing we know: Nishioka has a great bat, potentially. I say potentially because he hit .346 in the Japanese League last season, but I'm a tad skeptical because the MLB is the best baseball league in the world and to expect those numbers would be Ichiro like. He has speed. He has 3 Gold Gloves to his name.

Nishioka also has quite the following in Spring Training. Several of the media reporters down in Fort Myers covering the Twins have written various articles discussing how Nishioka is pretty much a superstar in his native land. He's got a translator for him and 20-30 cameramen following his journey. I, for one, am very excited to see this talented player. Can the season start already?

Spring Training Underway

The Minnesota Twins have started 2011 Spring Training. Well, kind of at least. Pitchers and catchers have reported to Fort Myers, Florida. While there are a good amount of players already there, not all position players have to report yet. The first Spring Training game is set for February 27th against the Boston Red Sox. I bet the weather is fairly warmer there than up here. It sounds like Tsuyoshi Nishioka has quite the following down there already. Delmon Young Gets a Raise

The Minnesota Twins and Delmon Young avoided arbitration. The two sides agreed to a one-year contract for 2011, worth $5.375 million. Delmon Young had a breakout season last year, batting .298 with 21 home runs and a team-high 112 RBIs. He made $2.6 million last season. Congratulations to Mr. Young, you earned the raise. Hopefully Delmon can continue his pace and show he's a player to be reckoned with in baseball.

PS - Delmon Young was on the cover of MLB Sporting New Baseball last month with Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers.

The Future of Francisco Liriano

As a homegrown Minnesota Twins fan, I really did not know what to make of the Francisco Liriano "rumors". Joe Christensen, a well respected writer for the Star Tribune, wrote last week that the team is listening to offers and willing to possibly trade Francisco Liriano. Hence why the team agreed to a 1-year deal with Liriano and not a multi-year deal. Last season, Liriano went 14-10 and became a more reliable starter. The season before however was not so smooth.

Maybe the front office believes that Liriano still has to prove he is a pitcher that is worth millions of dollars and a multi-year contract. Here's my take: Hold on to Frankie and watch how he does this year, kind of a make or break season. If he prospers, then we sign him to a longer deal. If he falters, then we listen possibly for some offers for maybe infield/pitching prospects. Time will tell. I've always liked Frankie and hope he stays a Twin for a long time.

Joe Mauer To Appear on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon"

Joe Mauer, Mr. Minnesota himself, will appear on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" tomorrow night (Tuesday, February 15th). He will be promoting the video game for which he is this year's cover boy for "MLB 11 The Show." This is the first time in awhile that I can remember a Minnesota Twin player appearing on a Late Night show, so I thought I'd remind some Twins fans to check it out. The Late Night with Jimmy Fallon is on NBC and begins at 11:35 Central Time.

MLB Network's 20 Greatest Games

Not being able to watch the Super Bowl postgame because of the winning team, I had to start channel surfing. I came across the MLB Network's Top 20 Games in MLB History. They profiled Game #16: Game 163 with Minnesota Twins vs. Detroit Tigers. It truly must be a good game if a game that happened less than two seasons ago is already considered one of the greatest baseball games played all-time. The one-hour special has Michael Cuddyer in studio analyzing the game and giving some insider information along the way. That game truly was a legendary game and if anyone has the MLB Network, check the listings and be sure to watch it!

Francisco Liriano and Minnesota Twins Reach Deal

The Minnesota Twins and Francisco Liriano avoided arbitration over the weekend, agreeing to a 1-year, $4.3 million deal. The new one-year deal is a signficant raise for Liriano, who last year through arbitration with the Twins agreed to a $1.6 million deal. The two sides met exactly in the middle this time as the pitcher asked for $5 million and the club countered with an offer of $3.6 million. Liriano went 14-10 last season with a solid 3.62 ERA. He had scoreless inning streaks of 23 and 21. This is a very affordable deal. The deal leaves only Delmon Young left in the arbitration process.

John Gordon Is Retiring After the Season

The Minnesota Twins announced Friday that longtime radio announcer John Gordon will retire following the 2011 season. Gordon has done the play by play for the Minnesota Twins since being hired before the 1987 season, when the Twins won a World Series title.The 2011 season will mark the 70-year-old Gordon's 25th as a member of the Twins radio broadcast team. He will reduce some of his duties this season, announcing 15 spring training contests and 90 regular season games.

Jim Perry Elected to Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame

Jim Perry is set to join the existing 22 members of the Twins Hall of Fame this summer. The starting pitcher pitched with the Minnesota Twins from 1962 to 1973. In his 17 year career he amassed 215 wins and 1,576 strikeouts. He was a 3 time All-Star and won the 1970 American League Cy Young. His brother Gaylord is a member of the Hall of Fame as a pitcher. Welcome aboard Jim Perry!

TwinsFest 2011 A Success

As you may know, TwinsFest 2011 was moved to the National Sports Complex in Blaine because of the Metrodome collapse. The festival sold out very quickly and for good reason. The Minnesota Twins continue to be one of the most popular teams in the Midwest and definitely for Minnesotans. It is a team that the people here are proud about. Many of the players were at TwinsFest including Joe Mauer, Denard Span, Danny Valencia, Kevin Slowey, Brian Duensing, Ben Revere, and Anthony Slama. Minnesota Twins System Ranked #7 in MLB

The Minnesota Twins farm system was ranked #7 in the MLB by baseball guru Keith Law last week. This is what Mr. Law wrote about the Minnesota Twins system: "A sneaky-good system, it's not loaded with big names but boasts a few impact guys and a ton of depth. This is more than just the Twins' usual assortment of strike-throwing fourth starters and speedy outfielders, a testament to good drafting and some major investments in the international arena, where they've been as aggressive as any club."

The Kansas City Royals are #1, with the Rays, Braves, Jays, Phillies, and Angels as the only teams in front of the Twins.
